When I first heard of Designated Survivor, I was like “Oh shit! Jack Bauer as President.” Come on, that would be cool. Okay, all joking aside, I’ve never heard of a designated survivor before. The whole idea is that a member of the United States Cabinet who is arranged to be at a secure and undisclosed location when the President and the country’s other top leaders are gathered at a single location, such as during State of the union address or presidential inaugurations. This is intended to guarantee continuity of government in the event of a catastrophic occurrence that kills the President and many government officials.
In the show Kiefer Sutherland is Tom Kirkman the designated survivor. On the night of the State of the Union, an explosion claims the lives of the President and all members of the Cabinet. Kirkman is immediately sworn in as President.
Sutherland does a great job of playing a man that is thrown into this chaotic situation. Maggie Q as an FBI agent was believable. Her love story is a bit forced. It’s not that bad where it takes you out of the story. But you do notice it. It’s also good to see Kal Penn getting back into acting and he is also the technical advisor for the show. The rest of the cast overall does a great job.
The show itself is very good, suspenseful and a bit scary. What makes it scary, is that it could happen. That’s what make this show work. There is a believability to it. The show does a great job of keeping you on the edge of your seat.
My only complaint is for such a big show with great actors, they couldn’t do a better job with the visual effects. The scene of the explosion was okay. But there were some scenes that are badly composited. It almost seemed like they rushed the visuals. But other than that, definitely check it out!
